The Wonderful World of Potatoes: Types and Cooking Methods in English

Introduction: Origin of potatoes

Potatoes are a versatile and beloved staple all around the world. They hail from the Andes mountains in modern-day Peru and Bolivia, and have since become an essential ingredient in numerous delicious recipes. There are more than 4,000 different types of potatoes, but only a handful is commonly found at most grocery stores. In this lesson, we’ll explore some popular potato varieties and their best-suited cooking methods. They were brought to England by Sir Frances Drake in 1586.

Now discuss the new vocabulary:

Grammar Question: 1

Which of the following sentences demonstrates correct usage of the subjunctive mood related to potatoes?

a) If I were a potato, I would be a russet.
b) If I was a potato, I would be russet.
c) If I was being a potato, I will be the russet.
d) If I were potato, I be russet.

What is the subjunctive mood?

The subjunctive mood in English is a grammatical mood used to express hypothetical situations, wishes, suggestions, and conditions that are contrary to fact. It is a special verb form often found in subordinate clauses and is marked by specific verb changes. In English, the subjunctive mood can be recognized by the use of the base form of the verb without any inflections, or sometimes by changes in verb conjugation.

Examples of subjunctive mood usage include:

1. Hypothetical situations:
If he were taller, he could join the basketball team.

2. Wishes and desires:
I wish I were on vacation right now.

3. Suggestions and recommendations:
It’s important that he see a doctor immediately.

4. Conditions contrary to fact:
If I had known about the party, I would have attended it.

When using the subjunctive mood in English, you may notice a difference between the verbs “to be” and “were.” To maintain consistency in your writing, use “were” when discussing hypothetical situations or wishes and desires (as seen in examples 1 and 2), even when referring to singular subjects. This helps distinguish between indicative mood statements (stating facts) and subjunctive mood statements (non-factual).
