In the 4th century AD, the Roman Emperor Constantine declared Christianity as the official religion of his empire. With this declaration came the need to establish a specific day for Christians to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. One theory suggests that the 25th of December was selected as an attempt to Christianize pagan holidays and practices. During this period, Romans celebrated Saturnalia – a festival honouring Saturn, the god of agriculture – from December 17th to 23rd followed by another festival called Dies Natalis Solis Invicti ‘Birthday of the Unconquered Sun,‘ on December 25th. This holiday commemorated the Roman sun god Sol Invictus and coincided with the winter solstice when days began getting longer. Many believe that by placing Christmas on this date, Christians were able to more easily adopt and adapt these pagan celebrations into their new faith.

Another reason for choosing December 25th relates to early Christian calculations of Jesus’ conception and crucifixion. Some early Christians believed that Jesus was both conceived and crucified on March 25th, and since those events were seen as significant in Christianity, it made symbolic sense for Jesus to have been conceived in correlation with his crucifixion date or nine months before his birth.
