Always remember that during the lesson we are continuing our RP practice to be able to improve our pronunciation and diction.
In this lesson we are going to look at ten common interjections used in English. Including the famous “WOW” signal.
“COMMON ENGLISH INTERJECTIONS”
We will try to use each interjection in a short conversation 90 seconds. After we discuss the meaning of each interjection the student will choose one of the three discussion topics in which he or she must use that expression. The conversation should last for 90 seconds.
SECTION ONE: Reading ” WOW Signal”
On August 15, 1977, astronomy witnessed one of its most intriguing mysteries when Ohio State University’s Big Ear radio telescope detected an extraordinarily powerful narrowband radio signal that would become legendary in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). The signal, which lasted for 72 seconds and appeared to originate from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius, was so remarkable that astronomer Jerry Ehman circled the signal data on the computer printout and wrote “Wow!” beside it, giving the phenomenon its memorable name. What made the signal particularly fascinating was its frequency of 1420 MHz—a protected spectrum reserved for astronomical research and notably the same frequency as neutral hydrogen, which many scientists had speculated would be the most logical frequency for extraterrestrial civilizations to use for communication. While the signal has sparked decades of speculation and research, recent scientific analysis has proposed a natural explanation: it may have been produced by a laser-like beam of radiation from a hydrogen cloud that was energized by a powerful, magnetic star. Despite this potential explanation, the Wow! signal remains one of the most compelling mysteries in astronomical history, as it has never been detected again despite numerous attempts to relocate it, and its unique characteristics continue to challenge our understanding of cosmic phenomena.
