READING TWO: Intermediate vocabulary
“The Man Who Sold the World,” a David Bowie song famous for its Nirvana cover, is about a profound identity crisis and the alienation from one’s past self, fueled by the pressures of fame and a fractured sense of self. The lyrics depict a person encountering a reflection of themselves, a “shadow-self” who represents choices made and paths not taken, symbolizing a dialogue with forgotten or suppressed aspects of their identity. The act of “selling the world” can be interpreted as selling out one’s authentic self for fame, or losing a part of their private life and control to the public eye.
