CLIMATE CHANGE VOCABULARY:

  1. Anthropogenic – Caused or produced by humans. The increase in greenhouse gases is largely due to anthropogenic activities such as industrialization.
  2. Mitigation – The action of reducing the severity or seriousness of something, especially climate change. Efforts to reduce carbon emissions are essential for climate change mitigation.
  3. Resilience – The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. Building resilient infrastructure is vital to withstand extreme weather events caused by climate change.
  4. Sustainability – The ability to maintain ecological and social systems over the long term. Promoting sustainability can help ensure future generations have access to natural resources.
  5. Carbon Footprint – The total amount of greenhouse gases emitted directly or indirectly by an individual, organization, or product. Reducing your carbon footprint can help combat global warming.
  6. Geoengineering – Deliberate modification of the Earth’s environment to counteract climate change effects. Geoengineering proposals include injecting aerosols into the atmosphere to reflect sunlight.
  7. Vulnerable – Susceptible to harm or damage. Low-lying island nations are particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels.
  8. Adaptation – Adjustments in systems or practices to minimize harm from climate impacts. Urban areas are developing adaptation strategies to cope with increased flooding.
  9. Biodiversity – The variety of plant and animal life in a particular habitat. Climate change threatens the biodiversity of many tropical rainforests.
  10. Ecological Footprint – The environmental impact of an individual or community, measured in land area required to sustain their use of natural resources. Reducing our ecological footprint is essential for combating climate change.
