LEARNING ENGLISH THROUGH MUSIC

Over the years I have been teaching English I have met many people who have used English music to help them learn their second language (English).  Although, when writing lyrics, writers use ‘poetic licence’ to form their lines. This is of course a beautiful thing and there are quite literally millions of examples in all languages not just English. So why not use this of most popular forms of media?

In this section I am going to introduce popular music in English to expand your knowledge and hopefully improve your English. Each video will present the lyrics and the music and then ask questions. By listening and then answering questiions about the text you will hopefully expand your knowledge of both vocabulary and the culture of how that language is used.  Click of the sub-menus at access the individual English mucis lessons. Each page have a video of the track and questions below.

Lesson Three

Lyrics

Title:  He ain’t heavy he’s my brother (The Hollies)

The road is long
With a many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows where
But I’m strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother
So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he to bear
We’ll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother
If I’m laden at all
I’m laden with sadness
That everyone’s heart
Isn’t filled with the gladness
Of love for one another
It’s a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we’re on the way to there
Why not share
And the load
Doesn’t weigh me down at all
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother
He’s my brother
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother
