A few years ago I was coming out of a restaurant in Sao Paulo when a young woman holding two children asked me for money. It was clear that she was in distress. At that time I didn’t speak portuguese and so I asked the person I was with what she was saying. In fact she described her situation as having three children to feed but having no money or food for her children.
PORTUGUESE: Alguns anos atrás eu estava saindo de um restaurante em São Paulo quando uma jovem com dois filhos me pediu dinheiro. Ficou claro que ela estava em apuros. Naquela época eu não falava português e por isso perguntei à pessoa com quem estava o que ela estava dizendo. Na verdade, ela descreveu sua situação como tendo três filhos para alimentar, mas sem dinheiro ou comida para seus filhos.
Like any other descent person I decided to help her. Over the next few weeks I appealed to my students to bring me food and clothes and then the following weekend and for the next three weekends I travelled up to the favela where the family were living and delivered packages of food and clothes.
PORTUGUESE: Como qualquer outra pessoa descendente, decidi ajudá-la. Nas semanas seguintes, pedi aos meus alunos que me trouxessem comida e roupas e depois no fim de semana seguinte e nos três finais de semana seguintes viajei até a favela onde a família morava e entreguei pacotes de comida e roupas.
It was at this point that I realised just how useful learning and knowing English could change the lives of people in Brazil. It’s a fact today and more so in the future that speaking English can offer you a much better life by allowing you to gain employment and thus improving the life of the individual and their family.
PORTUGUESE: Foi nesse momento que percebi o quão útil aprender e saber inglês pode mudar a vida das pessoas no Brasil. É um fato hoje e mais ainda no futuro que falar inglês pode lhe oferecer uma vida muito melhor, permitindo que você consiga um emprego e, assim, melhorando a vida do indivíduo e de sua família.
So, my aim is to raise enough money through small monthly donations to help people that can’t afford to support themselves by offering them free English classes. To do this I am asking students and visitors to our website to sign up to a monthly donation of just $2.00. This money will be used support poor students with free lessons and learning resources.
PORTUGUESE: Então, meu objetivo é arrecadar dinheiro suficiente através de pequenas doações mensais para ajudar pessoas que não podem se sustentar oferecendo aulas de inglês gratuitas. Este dinheiro será usado para apoiar alunos pobres com aulas gratuitas e recursos de aprendizagem.
